Former Atlanta Mayor to give ‘State of Buckhead’ on April 7

Sam Massell

ATLANTA, March 30, 2016 — Former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell will give his annual “State of Buckhead” address to the Buckhead Business Association (BBA) on Thursday, April 7.

The breakfast meeting is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on April 7 at the City Club of Buckhead. The event is open to the public.

Massell served as Atlanta’s mayor from 1970 to 1974 and as president of the City Council for eight years before that. Since leaving office, Massell, 88, has remained in public view, and in 1988, he was tapped by a dozen business leaders to start the Buckhead Coalition, an invite-only civic organization comprised of 100 local CEOs.

“It’s a very healthy community of which you can all be very proud,” Massell said of Buckhead during last year’s appearance. “I love this community, and I challenge you to see the value in it day in and day out and remind you that you are ex officio caretakers. This community is successful because of people just like you.”

As mayor, Massell is credited with establishing many of the icons that helped Atlanta grow into the city it is today, from the Omni Coliseum to Woodruff Park to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to Buckhead’s Charlie Loudermilk Park. He is also credited with opening City Hall opportunities to minorities.

“Mayor Massell has a long tradition of delivering the ‘State of Buckhead’ address to the Buckhead Business Association, and we are honored he will do so again this year,” said David Coxon, president & CEO of Georgia Primary Bank and the BBA’s 2016 president. “Mayor Massell is responsible for so much of the positive in the Buckhead community and the city as a whole. We look forward to hearing about his vision for what’s to come in 2016 and beyond.”

Tickets for BBA breakfasts are $20 for non-members; member tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Advanced tickets are recommended as Massell’s appearance is one of the BBA’s most popular meetings, and tickets typically sell out quickly.
